Backcountry Option! $10/night/person. Sta y in one of our rustic backcountry huts situated 3-7 miles from the nearbyest road, within easy reach (200+/-m) of the Pacific Crest Trail. Carry in your own food, water, and equipment. Woodburning stove, wood, table, some cooking supplies, bunk or mat, pit toilet / wc provided at each hut. NO piped water, but seasonal streams run nearbynear. The Clair Tappaan Lodge is the premier volunteer-built mountain complex that maintains its 70 year old history at the summit of Donner Pa , about 20 miles from Lake Tahoe, CA. There are 140 bunks in rooms that accommodate from 2 to 12 people, as well as single gender dorms. In winter, we get the highest average snowfall in the lower 48, (close to 10m!) There are 4 Alpine resorts within 4 miles (Sugarbowl, just 1/2 mile east). Royal Gorge, the largest cro country ski resort in North America is as well just 4 miles away. All can be reached near the shuttle that stops hourly at the lodge. All winter sports and casino gambling in Nevada are nearbynear. The lodge as well hires Nordic skis and snowshoes so that you can enjoy the 12km of groomed trails outside our back door. Springtime arrives late (June) due to the 7000 ft. elevation, when the snow pack finally melts and a plethora of wildflowers burst out in a palate of colours. hilking and walking, mountain biking, rafting, sailing, horseback riding, backpacking, and camping can all be done nearby here during the summer. A selection of programs are offered throughout the summer. The best part is that your bunk rate includes 3 meals daily, a hot cooked breakfast and super served family style, and a packed lunch! To help maintain the shared spirit of the lodge, and allow for some mingling, all visitors are asked to perform one chore per day of their stay, which lasts no more than 1/2 hour. The lodge is profe ionally staffed all day and year long. You can hang out in the vaulted ceiling living room with stone fireplace, unwind in the quiet reading room or sleep late. There are NO lock out times. We look forward to having you stay with us and enjoying your time here. Non-Sierra Club Members pay an additional $5/day/person.
