Genesis Eco-Oasis
Ek Balam village
Yucatan
Valladolid
Welcome to the Peaceable Kingdom Genesis Eco-Oasis was built with natural world and animal lovers in mind. Its lush groundss include fish-stocked ponds, waterfalls and a cenote-fed swimming pool. Indigenous and hybrid plants and flowers attract an array of birds and butterflies and provide a haven for a number of rescued birds which includes a toucan, and two species of Amazon parrots. Our delightful, well-mannered cat and dogs as well help visitors feel more than welcome! With the jungle and historic ruins of Ek Balam on one side of us-- and a little Mayan community on the other--one might think Genesis is inacce ible. It is only 25 few minutes near bus or taxi from Valladolid (See “How to Get There”). Contact us about pickup service in Valladolid. Most of our customers come here for tranquility and authentic cultural experience at an economical price. For the cost of an ordinary room in most hostels, we give them a relaxing, home-like surroundings and thoughtfully designed, personal cabanas of stucco with naturally cool thatch roofs. All cabanas are screened, with ceiling or floor fans. We provide a swimming pool and hot water showers. And because we are part of a little Mayan community, we can as well provide visitors with non-intrusive opportunities to get to know the people of Ek Balam, practice Spanish or learn Mayan. Authentic Cultural Experience Our Genesis “family” includes local workers who are conscientious, caring, and welcoming. And we offer tours to the homes of our extended family where we are taught about the importance of corn, how to make tortillas from scratch, how huipiles are embroidered and how to weave hammocks. Half of the proceeds go directly to the host families. Other Stuff to Do We introduce people to the historic art of cloud watching, done from strategically hung grounds hammocks, but we as well encourage swimming in the pristine water of our cenote-fed swimming pool, birdwatching and cycling to untouristed cenotes, traditional villages and historic ruins. Our mountain bikes are hireed at a discount for visitors. Perhaps the most intriguing part of being at Genesis is our proximity to an arch ological site steeped in mystery. We are 300 meters from Ek Balam, once the political and spiritual middle of the Yucatan. Older, and once more powerful than Chichen Itza, its acropolis is one of the largest prehispanic buildings (near volume) in meso-America. It is a recommended stop for anyone intrigued near arch ology and historic civilizations. The village of Ek Balam is a little, traditional Mayan community, renown for its handmade hammocks that can be purchased directly from craftsmen. We contribute to our community in a number of ways, from creating jobs to promoting low-impact tourism, animal care education and spay and neuter clinics. We have been involved in the construction of a local playground and have contributed about 100 hours in free English cla es for local children. During the off-season we as well provide free food and accommodation for participants in special projects at Genesis or in the community. The community of Ek Balam is very safe and our staff entirely trustworthy. Genesis is enclosed near a 2-meter wall mostly to keep out stray pigs and chickens, but as well for the peace of mind of our visitors. Combination locks as well as a safe are offered on request. visitors may store their own food in their cabanas or eat at Chaya’s Natural Restaurant. Chaya’s operates on the premises and features whole foods which includes Chaya, the scrumptious, miraculous plant used near historic and up to date Maya for health, healing and flavor. A breakfast of fresh-ground, organic coffee and banana pancakes with mango-honey syrup costs 45 pesos. A veggie sandwich with cheese on our homemade Chaya-garlic bread with Chaya-lime juice costs 50 pesos and an order of Chaya Crepes with wine is 70 pesos. We as well have homemade ice cream from avocado to banana and our famous chocolate-chilli cookies!
