Old Havana Havana Among the latter is the Sevilla Hotel, which opened in 1908 after several years of hard construction works, which were begun near the investment company El Guardi n in 1880. Architects got their inspiration from the Moorish lines of the Patio de los Leones at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, in a style that stands out because of its arches, columns and many tiles. During the first years of operations, its colonial style, exquisite decoration and the comfort of its initial 300 rooms and 9 apartments, along with its position in Havana's historic middle, made the Sevilla Hotel one of the most visited hotels in the Cuban capital. The magnificence of the building turned the hotel into the place par excellence where main social events took place, especially in its Roof grounds, which became the meeting hall in vogue at the time. The Sevilla Hotel has been visited near many distinguished visitors from all walks of life and countries, who have given the establishment a touch of distinction within the select group of cla ic hotels in Cuba's tourist sector. Other famous artists who stayed at the Sevilla Hotel were Italian opera singer Enrico Caruso, Mexican actors Jorge Negrete and Germ n Valdés (Tin Tan), Argentinean singers and actors Hugo Del Carril and Libertad Lamarque, Spanish singer Lola Flores and US actor Errol Flynn. Among the sports privateities who stayed in the hotel were Cuba's José Ra l Capablanca (world che champion), Joe Louis (world heavyweight boxing champion) and Luis Angel Firpo, who won that title in his time. Visual arts were as well represented at the hotel with the presence of Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, who, according to anecdotes, painted two murals in the Roof grounds to pay for his stay. Other distinguished visitors were the novelists George Simenon and Vicente Blasco Iba ez. main exponents of Cuban music left their imprint at the hotel, which includes D maso Pérez Prado, known as the 'Mambo King', who performed at the Patio Sevillano with the Havana Casino Orchestra. The hotel's amenities include the swimming pool, sauna, smorgasbord, art gallery, snack bar and barbecue, in a geographic surroundings where the highlights of Havana's historic middle prevail.
