Architects got their inspiration from the Moorish lines of the Patio de los Leones at the Alhambra Palace in Granada, Spain, in a style that stands out through its arches, columns and many tiles. Its colonial style, exquisite decoration and relaxing rooms, along with its position in Havana's historic middle, made this hotel one of the most visited hotels in the Cuban capital. The magnificence of the building turned the hotel into the place par excellence where main social events took place, especially in its Roof grounds which became the meeting hall in vogue at the beginning of 20th century. Visual arts were as well represented at the hotel with the presence of Mexican muralist David Alfaro Siqueiros, who, according to anecdotes, painted two murals in the Roof grounds to pay for his stay.
