It was constructed on the abbey site originally belonging to Winchester Cathedral. The purpose of the hotel being built was so that it could be used as a back drop for something pleasant to look at from the Cathedral and the grounds it is set in, before shops and office buildings were constructed. A point of interest is that we house the boilers that belong to the Cathedral in our basement.
