The York Youth Hotel (Formally named BISHOPHILL HOUSE )was built in the year 1740 near a wealthy York Merchant. It is in the vicinity of the site of the Duke of Buckinghams Palace which was the finest residence in York at the time. Many of the original features are still present. The Ballroom which once featured a Roccoco ceiling still has its splendid bay window looking out over the town, the sashes of which are made of bronze. This room is now our large dorm. There is a Georgian style Porticoed entrance leading to the original 18th century diamond patterned York stone floor. Many of the original corpleasants still exsist both dentiled and castilated. The attic rooms which strangely are our superior dorms, were once the servants quarters of this rich and lavish house. Below the house you can see the original corbelled cellers which once used to be the wine cellars. There is as well a blocked up pa away which once was a personal way down to the river.
